SimpliSafe's Away Mode: Secure Your Home with One Tap

Posted March 25th, 2024 by SimpliSafe

SimpliSafe's Away Mode activates all sensors (entry sensors, motion sensors, and glass break sensors) and cameras with the touch of a button.

Once Away Mode is activated, any alerts or movements detected by these sensors will trigger an alarm and you will receive an alert via the SimpliSafe App. If you are subscribed to professional monitoring, SimpliSafe’s professional monitoring agents will contact the appropriate authorities if an emergency news to be addressed. Additionally, if you have SimpliSafe cameras set up in and around your home, they will also be activated and record any movement.

The primary advantage of SimpliSafe's Away Mode is the peace of mind it offers while you're away, but also the ease at which you can turn it on and customize it. If there's a break-in or any other type of home emergency, SimpliSafe’s professional monitoring agents will alert the authorities, minimizing any potential damage and improving customer outcomes.

Away Mode is perfect for when you're:

  • Going on vacation

  • Leaving your home unattended for an extended period of time

  • Running errands for the day and not sure when you’ll be home

It’s also okay to activate Away Mode before you go to sleep at night. However, you’d have to be careful with this; if you were to get up in the middle of the night, you may be too sleepy to notice that you’ve triggered a motion sensor, which could give you quite the startle. A better option for you during this situation would be to use Home Mode. More on that in a bit!

How to Turn On Away Mode

Activating Away Mode is a simple process that can be done through your keypad or the SimpliSafe mobile app. You can also set up geofencing in the SimpliSafe app to activate "Away Mode" automatically.

Here’s how it’s done:

  • Press the "Away" button on your keypad to arm your system.

  • Alternatively, use the SimpliSafe mobile app to arm your system.

  • Set up geofencing in the SimpliSafe app, which uses your smartphone's location to detect when you leave your home and automatically activates Away Mode.

If you activate Away Mode while you’re still in the house, you’ll have 60 seconds to get out before the system is armed. Remember, it can also be activated after you leave the home, too. But, some people may feel more comfortable doing it as they’re heading out.

When you return home, the system will switch back to "Home Mode" or "Off Mode," depending on your preferences.

Can You Customize Away Mode?

The default setting for Away Mode is that it activates all sensors. But, depending on the situation, you may want to customize your settings to better suit your needs. For instance, if you have pets at home, you may want to disable motion sensors to prevent false alarms while still easily arming the rest of your SimpliSafe system with an easy click.

To do this, go to the "Settings" menu in the SimpliSafe app, select "Away," and customize your settings. You can choose which sensors to activate or deactivate, set up entry and exit delays, and adjust the volume of the alarm.

Home Mode vs. Away Mode

SimpliSafe offers two modes: "Away Mode" and "Home Mode." In Home Mode, the sensors that detect movement are deactivated, allowing you to move around freely in your home without triggering the alarm. However, the sensors that detect opened doors and windows are still active, providing an added layer of security. Your sensors can be customized in Home Mode, just as they can in Away Mode.

Quickly Secure Your Home With Away Mode

SimpliSafe's Away Mode is an essential feature for anyone who wants to ensure the safety and security of their home while they're away. Whether you're going on vacation or just running errands, having a quick way to secure your home — especially in case you forget to on your way out — can help you focus on what you’re doing instead of worrying if your home is protected.
